Design vs Writing - What Should You Invest In First?

Web design is a massive industry, and with good reason.

A good-looking website can add a professional polish to any business.

Unfortunately, most entrepreneurs automatically turn to web design as the first step, and if you're trying to create or grow your business online, the reality is that good writing is far more important than good design, and here are 3 reasons why.

1. You can get a great-looking website using free templates, but there's no free way to get great sales writing.

Although you can certainly use a template for your website's writing, the fact is that unless you have a few years of experience as a copywriter, your website is going to fall short.

Customers will not care if your website looks similar to other sites on the internet (and they'll probably never even see those sites anyway), but if your copywriting sounds like every other business's in your industry, they're going to think you're nothing special... and that's a mistake that will cost you money.

Part of what makes great copywriting so powerful is that it's unique. People want to feel that buying your product is a smart move because they're getting something rare, something no other company has to offer.

2. Pretty images don't make sales. Good writing does.

Just because your website looks good doesn't mean anyone's going to buy your stuff.

In fact, unless you're selling web design services, the appearance of your website is completely irrelevant for your customers.

People want to learn the details before they make a commitment. They're not going to hand over their cash just because you look professional. You have to actually convince them that their money is going to be well spent.

Take Amazon for example. There's nothing spectacular about their web design, but it's one of the most successful selling machines of all time. The marketing strategies they use are far more important than how it looks.

3. No one can even tell the difference between a free template website and a custom design.

Unless there's something so unusual about the website that it's difficult to use, a free template website is probably indistinguishable from a custom one.

That's because template websites are made by professional designers, and those designs work with a wide range of products and services.

On the other hand, people will notice if your website's writing wasn't done by a professional. They might not know the difference, but they will feel it... when they decide not to buy your products.

And worse yet, you will notice the lack of sales.
